Thinly veiled

I’m not the first person to write about the recent return of veils.

But this season there’s been so much of it, in so many places, I had to wonder — what exactly is this about?

Mystery? Mourning? The Middle East?

When I tried to pinpoint the origin of the idea, my first thought was of a ubiquitous fashion world presence… The amazing Diane Pernet.

I’ve been obsessed with the blogger/filmmaker/former designer for years. She’s a Grande Doyenne in the Monde du Mode, and she cuts a striking figure – swathed in layers of black and perpetually veiled.

But if Diane’s look is a little strong for your taste, never fear!  This trend isn’t limited to the extreme.

These little, easy-to-wear shorties will give you your fix -

British millners Bernstock Speirs introduced their amazing veiled beanies in 2010.

The next year, Jil Sander did a collaboration with Stephen Jones for their SS 2012 collection, and sent these babies down the runway:

And boom! The veiled cap is everywhere.
